Hello, everyone. Welcome to the inaugural post of the Wheel of Time Reread Redux!
I know, right, some of y’all are probably all what the hell is this, Leigh, but fear not, O my Peeps, for I shall explain all in this handy-dandy introductory post right heah. Because I love you, even if I have not met you.
Therefore, click on to see what this crazy adventure is all about!
SO, Once Upon A Time, there was an epic fantasy series called the Wheel of Time, and it was pretty popular, and yours truly liked it enough to be shanghaied into maintaining a novel-length FAQ on it, and all was chugging along pretty fair when the author of the series died, and it really sucked, mostly because the author was an awesome person who deserved to have lived way longer than that, but also partly because he didn’t have a chance to finish his magnum opus, and that sucked too. It was all very sucky, is my point.
But then a new author was found to complete the series, and things looked to be getting unsucky, and to celebrate the general de-suckification going on, the Powers That Be at Tor.com decided to conduct a Reread of the series in preparation for what was at the time going to be the last book in the series, and for possibly masochistic reasons they chose me to do it. And the rest, as they say, is history, and the Wheel of Time Reread concluded with much fanfare and explosions of feels this past May.
The thing is, though, that the Wheel of Time Reread, as it was conducted, was never a full reread of the series, for two main reasons.
The first reason is that the vast majority of the Reread (in fact, ALL of it except for the reread of the actual last book) was written while I still didn’t know how the story ended, and so I was unable to take that ending into account when commenting on the earlier books. I can’t say for sure that knowing the ending will change all of my earlier thoughts on the series, but surely it will change some, and possibly it will change a lot of them.
The second reason is that because of the way things fell out, the earliest books in the series kind of got shafted in terms of the time and attention I was able to pay to them, because up until about (I think) the fourth book or thereabouts, I was still under the impression that I only had until November of 2009 to get through the entire series, because originally the plan had been for Brandon Sanderson to finish the series in one book.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA and here we are five years later.
It all worked out for the best in the end, of course, but there’s no denying that there’s probably a lot more room for thought in my earlier commentaries than I was originally able to provide.
Hence, for these reasons, the Reread of the Reread! Ta da!
*jazz hands*
So! Lemme tell you a little how this is gonna go. Or how I think it’s gonna go, because honestly, I’m kind of making this up as things progress, so I reserve the right to adjust things as I go, depending.
But how I think it’s gonna go is that rather than reproduce the original posts in their entirety and insert commentary on them, I will be linking back to whichever original Reread post I am talking about and then, er, talk about it, with appropriate quotage where necessary. How many original posts I will be covering per Redux post will depend entirely on how much new stuff I have to say about them. It’s possible, especially for the first few books, that I might take two or more Redux posts to discuss one original post, owing to how very quickly I was going at the time.
I should note at the outset that I have really not made much of a practice of rereading my own posts, especially the earlier ones, so there is an awful lot of the Reread that I myself haven’t looked at in literally years. I expect that this will lead to a fair amount of discombobulation and embarrassment on my part, and (probably) hilarity on yours. Or so I hope. I mean, if I have to squirm over whatever terrible joke or Very Deep Thought I totally thought was a good idea at the time which probably wasn’t, at least someone ought to get some entertainment out of it, yeah?
In addition to that, I will probably also be doing, here and there, some stand-alone posts dealing with specific, series-wide things. My plans for these are as of yet rather nebulous, but for instance I will probably be doing a post concentrating on the worldbuilding of WOT, and another concerning the various prophecies throughout the series and my thoughts on how they did (or did not) get fulfilled. And other things like that. Should be fun, regardless. More As It Develops.
All of the original posts are of course listed in The Wheel of Time Reread Index here, and all Redux posts will also be archived there going forward. (The Wheel of Time Master Index, as always, is here, which has links to news, reviews, interviews, and all manner of information about the Wheel of Time in general on Tor.com.) And of course don’t forget that The Wheel of Time Reread is also available as e-books, iffn’ ya wanna.
And this should go without saying, but just in case: all Reread Redux posts will contain massive spoilers for the entire Wheel of Time series, so if you haven’t finished all of the Wheel of Time yet, this is probably a good place to stop and go do that first before coming back to this blog. Don’t worry, it’ll still be here, I promise.
And that looks to be about the size of it, I think. So welcome, one and all, to the Reread of the Wheel of Time Reread! The fun begins next Tuesday, so see you there!
Leigh Butler is a writer, blogger, and opinionator for Tor.com, where in addition to all this fresh madness, she conducts A Read of Ice and Fire. She currently lives in New Orleans, and would like summer to stop now, please.
Yay!
Dovie’andi se tovya sagain!
I like battles.
You will do a standalone post solely on the benefits of spanking as it occurs in the Wheel of Time universe.
It is foretold!
RobMRobM @3: Would you say you like them like a brother? Like a… brother of battle?
Pool: Guess the number of head-desks Leigh is provoked to by her own earlier comments (only headdesk selfies allowed; general headdesks at the first appearance of Gawyn, for example, do not count).
S
“The Wheel of Time turns, and Rereads come and pass, leaving analysis that become canon. Canon fades to fanfic, and even fanfic is long forgotten when the Reread that gave it birth comes again.”
I love you to Leigh!
YES!!!!!
Work productivity is officially going down on Tuesday’s for the forseable future, can’t wait! Great idea, never enough WOT in my life; it will be interesting to geek out on prophecy and theory as you go along and how everything ties together or doesn’t. Tai’shar manertheren!
I’m eagerly awaiting this. I loved your initial re-read, and I love the “voice” that comes across as you write. You make me laugh, a lot.
I’m also reading the Song of Ice and Fire re-read, but that one is sadly not nearly so light-hearted and fun, and I’m glad you’ll have something new to write about other than GRRM’s dark and dire (yet still awesome) work.
I feel like we’re all gathering at the top of a mountain and strapping on our skis and boards. Wheeeeeeee!
Amir @@@@@ 7: Like!
@5 I only like them in the Cauthenian (Matrimian?) sense.
Which Age is it (for purposes of the Re-Read)? 1st, 2nd, 3rd?
Not to rain on everybody’s parade, but it was my impression that the Re-Read would begin today. Leigh, that is what I thought you mentioned in last weeks announcement of the new Re-Read project. Of course, I may not read last week’s announcement with a fine tooth comb. And like a perfect Aes Sedai, you said the truth as you wanted it to be. If so, well done Sedai Leigh.
Thanks for reading my musings,
AndrewB
I was so disappointed by the last book I don’t plan to reread the series but I will follow Leigh wherever she goes (in a non stalker way).
Leigh, I will keep hounding you to read Alan Bradley Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, or the Buckshaw Chronicles (first three books), until you tell me you do not want to or that you have.
johntocaelpiano @@.-@ (or anybody else, for that matter) — What is the first on screen mention of spanking? When is the first on screen spanking scene?
(With respect to my two questions above either spanking as a punishment or as a form of bedroom exercise)
Thanks for reading my musings,
AndrewB
Yippee! So glad my Tuesday will be awesome again!
@@@@@#7 Amir….great!
:-D
So this is sort of going to have a “Reread: The Making Of” vibe.
Can’t wait.
I’m just happy Leigh gets to do something fun instead of slogging through GRRMs pile of depressing slop.
Also, once you know the ending, seeing jsut how far ahead things were set up or pointed to is fun.
I’ll definitely check in for the general Wheel of Time posts, those sound cool! I love Jo Walton’s similar posts on the Kingkiller Chronicles.
Cool. I got in on the initial re-read somewhere in the middle of the series, so this time around I can take part in it from the start.
Been waiting patiently (not really) ;) for this to get going. Happy it is almost here.
Hurray. I love you too! I hope one day to get a chance to meet at some kind of…meet up…thing.
I love love love love the FAQ. The Darrell Sweet cover art post still makes me giggle.
WTH?
No really, thank you Leigh for the Redux set up. Last week’s post didn’t really tell us how it was going to work, just that it was coming.
So we did get something this week.
Re: Headdesking – I’m expecting at least 2 per early book, since she didn’t really get to cover those in depth the first time around.
Spanking:
Wasn’t the first one Perrin & Faile? She was being a brat somewhere in book 3? Anyone???
So, it’s finally here, the Reread Redux.
The one thing that I think will be oh so very different than last time is the lack of looney theories. No “who is Gaudel Cain” or Taimandred theories.
One suggestion that I would like you all to consider for a stand alone post is one specifically diving into and tidying up the various prophecies, as much as possible, and a separate one for Min’s visions.
I was click baiting myself by going through the old WOTFAQ pages and realized that there was much that could be added and discussed by us for the benefit of that wonderful resource. I think it would help me.
I’m also hoping that we can discuss things in such a way that we move easily past the hunny, two hunny and three hunny as we did on the first reread. That’s what really pulled me into the reread the first time and what kept me rapt and amazed at the family that developed.
Ways, Tektonica, Insectoid and of course, WetlanderNW, I’m looking at you 8^D
JeffS.
I am still only an egg
Braid Tug,
I think you’re right but I’ll have to look it up. Of course there were so many times early on that Faile was being a brat that it’s hard to tell them apart. Sometimes it surprises me how much I liked her later on after how much I despised her early.
Yay, I’m responding to one of my reread friends. WOOT!
I am still only an egg
Thanks Leigh.
I’m looking forward to this Redux. I had kind of reached my Wall o Text threshold near the end of the original reread, but I look forward to contributing to any fun discussions by our fearless leader and the rest of the group as they pop up.
Braid Tug@27 – Perrin spanked Faile after she assaulted him when they first entered the Ways in Book 4. Rhuarc spanked Berelain (offscreen) for being Berelain earlier in Book 4.
I’m drawing a blank (off the top of my head, anyway) whether there was any earlier spanking. Maybe some Tar Valon punishment to our Wonder Girls in Book 3?
Leigh, this is going to be fun! Two things I’m specially excited about: covering the earlier books in more detail, and looking at it again now that we know the end. It will be Very Cool.
Make that three: having fun with the WoTRereaders again!!
(Some have joined us over on the Words of Radiance reread, but not everyone. I miss some folks…)
Also: awesome comments! Especially Amir @7.
I’m so excited to get in at the beginning of this re-re-read!! Did I miss how many chapters we will be reading each week?
Here I am, here I am! *waves madly*
Can’t wait to have us all back again!
Sounds good. Count me in.
Headdesking and Spanking:
Can we get Tor.com to install a couple counters on this topic?
@7 – You, sir, are winning the commentary (so far). :)
@35 – Headdesking + spanking = twerking? Without props?
Just an announcement of what is to come and there are already 37 comments on the first day.
I wonder if the Wheel of Time Re-read (and the subsequent Re-re-read) are the columns with the most comments in general.
Longtimefan – Absolutely. Nothing else compares. (Unless you lump together all the sweepstakes, where 800 people comment in the hope of getting the goods.) Jo Walton’s Kingkiller Chronicles reread often broke 100, and so far the Stormlight Archive is making a pretty good showing, but neither of them can even remotely challenge the WoT reread – either total comments, or average comments per post, or any other meaningful comparison I can imagine.
I am lookng forward to the more detailed commentary on the early books too. I aways wanted to see Leigh to go over them in the same manner as the later books.
I am very pleased, indeed!
Also, very much lookng forward to the comments. As aways. Lots of folks weren’t around at the beginning. I, myself, was a lurker.
I’m in.
Of course I begged Leigh to do something like this at JordanCon. And now I owe her my firstborn. And a drink.
Does the firstborn get a say in the matter? ;)
Hi Leigh!
::waves::
Here I am, better late than never.
Yeah, you pooched the first bit of the series, going at a crazy southerner’s pace. -Heh- You came to your senses later…. and had much explaining to do as you set the bar so high. Let’s do the doover right.
I call “dibs” on all the hunnies.
Woof™.
What in the ?!
Right. 44 posts in and I have broke the internet. Starting fast and early Tor. This usually happens when I start rambling at post 800 or so…
Woof™.
Bring on the “”Elaborate aliases with backstories”
We’rrrre back. It’s not over and Leigh is still our commander.
Hi all! ::waves::
And subwoofer is already double-posting in an attempt to grab each and every hunny. ;-)
Amir @7
Cool beans.
JeffS @28 (and LDB)
How about a stand-alone for Egwene’s dreams too.
And apparently I am too (double-posting).
As long as I can keep commenting from my mobile, I will be in this group every week. I am so happy this is happening!
I was looking forward to this before, and am doing so even more now! Not just for the greater detailed analysis of the early books, and being able to examine things with the entirety of the series to draw upon, but for these mini-essays you plan to do on various deeper topics. They sound meaty, intriguing, and awesome. Also, having read all the early entries and remembering how funny/misremembered/wrong/confused they often were, it will be hilarious indeed (and educational) to see you reflect back on your own commentage as well.
@7 Amir: Absolutely perfect. Pure win indeed.
Hooray!! This…. this will give me the impetus to finally tackle my first re-read of the whole thing. So excited I get to join the fun now! :D
Macster – get cracking. We’re used to at least five paragraphs per post.
Woof – welcome back, man. You’ve been missed. You will have hunny competition – some of the people here are vicious competitors (I’m looking at you ValMar).
JD – first born and a drink? Having bizarre thoughts involving a root beer float….
Wet – ASOIF also has some massive posts but not up to full WoT-ian levels.
@33 – waves back.
@27, 30 – my “favorite” is still the “That killed the goat” Mat-Jolene scene in Books 10 or 11 but I think the first spanking scene we get (albeit offscreen) is Rhuarc – Berelain early in Book 4. (I don’t view Mistress of Novices punishment as proper spanking.) Perrin and Faile in the Ways comes later.
“Cries Happy Tears”. I caught up! I didn’t discover WOT until after the Fourteenth book came out. In March of 2013 I order the 14th book, along with the first three, mistakingly thinking it was a four-book series. Silly me. Once the books arrived I realized, of course, it was a 14-book series, so I went about ordering the balance of the books. I spent three months reading all the books only taking breaks to read my “freebie lender” with Amazon Prime. I never realized there was a fandom, discussion groups, ReReads, FAQs or conventions until I came across the ReRead sometime last September when looking for something to read on Amazon Prime. I came across the Reread and thought, um, what? I clicked on the ReRead eBook and realized there was way more to WOT than I ever thought or could have imagined. I cannot believe I was so clueless. I finished the ReRead last month in anticipation of the ReRead Redux. Let the *Head Desking* commence. Now I can keep up with everyone else! As long as I live long enough!
No words to describe my excitement! Can’t wait to go back to the beginning. I’ve got a friend reading them for the first time at the moment and this will prove the perfect outlet for all the things I can’t discuss with her!
I’m totally on board for this….Damn! I missed it yesterday; I’ll have to set an alarm or something.
Thank you once again, Leigh, for sharing your thoughts on this story, and for making this forum available.
I am so excited about this! I didn’t pick up on the reread until sometime around book 6-8, and I always wished there was more commentary on the first few books, and then later hoped that there would be a re-reread once all the books were out, and now it looks like we’re getting both. Thanks for the great news, and for giving me something to look forward to on Tuesdays again!
Ways,
Yes that would also be a helpful stand alone.
WDWParksgal ,
Glad you’re here and welcome to the slightly dysfunctional WOT reread family. I think your work at catching up with all of this is commendable and share your happiness.
I extend you full benefits of membership including access to the bunker where various libations and comestables are kept in imaginary splendor for the benefit of all. Currently, there are Oatmeal raisin cookies and a bottle of Bushmills Irish whisky in the bunker that I just dropped off on my way here. An odd combination to be sure, but satisfying none the less.
Subwoofer and Macster,
Nice to hear from you and I’m glad to see that such stalwart companions are back amongst us.
For all that are lurking and/or showing up for the first time. YAY, it’s nice to have new voices.
If any are wondering how I’m posting so much during the work day, I’m home on medical leave after carpal tunnel surgery on my right wrist. It’s healing up very well but I’m still mostly typing left handed.
I hope to be able to type normally when I have to start typing in the old tongue…
JeffS
I am still just an egg.
Leigh,
I am sorry if this has been asked already but are you going to look at the WOT encyclopedia that Tor is releasing sometime in the future- I might be badly out of date on this.
**clamoring for more new WOT material to read**
I will have my precious…
ValMar@40 – Yeah, I don’t think I joined until maybe book 5 or 6, so I’m looking fwd to being part of this group from the start.
macster@49 – I claim impostor. That post was way too short.
RobM2@51 – I think we’re both saying the same thing about the order of spankings in Book 4, and I have no problem excluding any Tar Valon spankings from consideration of Leigh-headdesk-worthiness; I was just adding them for a complete picture.
As for “favorite” spanking scene (given context/circumstances), I’m inclined to agree with you on the Mat/Jolene altercation.
WDWParksGal@52 – Welcome! Glad you caught up and hope you enjoy the ride. And then what JeffS said (In the bunker I periodically leave sour candy and dirty vodka martinis (I’d suggest consuming each separately) for those who are interested)…
I’ve been a long-time lurker and am beyond excited to be able to join the Reread Redux at the beginning.
I think the stand alone posts to explore prophecy should definitely be separated between Tower/Min and Tuon/Seanchan, perhaps even split out the Aiel prophecies as well.
@7 You. Win.
@56 – Enough carping (carpaling), let me give you a hand with that….
@58 – yes, we are saying the same thing, except that I prefer using a clean glass when I have a martini. ;-o
@59 – lots of different prophecies – Min, Egwene, Perrin, Lidya, Dark, Borderlanders, Aiel, etc. Multi may well be better than binary.
Really looking forward to this! I may have to try to catch it in the afternoon (my time) since it’s not usually up when I do my main reading in the morning, but I’ll get there.
Definitely agree that this will be a lot more fun than GRRM’s totally depressing stuff, which I gave up on after the first book, even with Leigh’s most excellent read and react.
It’s very nice to see so many familiar names around again, along with the new ones.
I notice someone sniffing around the hunny- no calling dibs on it… soon Victory shall be mine! Unless stymied by time zones- many times I had to go to bed with 4-5 posts short of the hunny, only to be greeted next day with a couple of walls-of-text by macster and Wetlander, et all, in the low 100s. An hour or so of reading material but the hunny in the jaws of an opportunistic canine.
Anyway, it will be interesting now that there won’t be speculation on future events, how different the character of Leigh posts and the comments will be.
Let the Lord of Chaos Rule!
I’m looking forward to seeing these posts and discussions more or less in real time. I was consistently a year or two behind the re-read posts, since I started my own re-read in 2011 and finished the series last month. Even as a lurker, with only one previous comment to my name, I had a lot of fun reading the posts and hope that the redux will be equally enjoyable.
Oh this is already so much fun! So many of the old crew! Hi everyone!
And new faces too!
Welcome all.
WDWParksGal@52—What a Herculean effort! I discovered the whole online community after book 3, I think. I never imagined there were so many groups and wonderful people involved. This has been a great discovery in my life….I hope it will be for you too.
I still want a “Like” button!
RROTRR FTW!!
I could be wrong, but I think the first time spanking became a hot-button issue for Leigh is the Perrin and Faile scene in the Ways. Berelain may have been first, but I think the wording was loose enough that Leigh was able to pretend it was something other than spanking. With Faile, there was no alluding to the incident; it was flat-out described. So I predict that if a stand-alone post about The Trouble with Spanking, it will be for the second incident and not the first. Looking forward to checking in on this in real-time this go around; I’ve wasted waaaaaay too much time at work speeding through the first Reread in the last 6-8 months so looking forward to doing it all over again, with a chance to chime in on the subjects at hand.
Somebody is tiffy ’cause my awesomeness called dibs on the hunny first. I’ll make it easy for folks out there because the reality is, I work for a living so I’m not just going to be lurking waiting to post. Yeah. A dog’s gotta eat. I will however be accepting donations in kibble and tummy rubs.
I was always around, just had nothing original to say… or that is, nothing to say that wouldn’t start an epic flame war and get me the “bad dog” talk and smacked on the snout.
Come to think, I’m going to have to crack a book here if I do want something original to say. Perhaps we could play a game called “this is how the series ended, but I’m going to second guess stuff and say that “this is how RJ would have ended it””. But Lan will stay the same.
Edit: Yes, yes I have joined “the Band of the Red Paw”.
Dogs rule.
Woof™.
BTW: do we start talking about the story now or do we wait for Leigh to do chapter 1?
Woof™.
Hi everybody! Longtime lurker, discovered the awesome WOT Reread too late to catch up, never posted, wished I could go back in time and be there from the very beginning – so this is basically my dream come true:)
And we’re back, baby!
BIG. FREAKIN’. SPARKLY. YAY.
1. Leigh, any advance word you can give us on how far to read for next week?
2. Y’all, The Eye of the World is *so good*. I can’t wait to reread Moiraine’s speech about Manetheren again.
3. Hi friends! And welcome new friends!
4. Four things I’m looking forward to:
a. covering the early books in more detail;
b. being here from the start instead of the middle;
c. laughing with Leigh and with each other at all the stuff we got wrong (the old comments section ought to be as interesting as Leigh’s original commentary);
d. RereadRedux T-shirts at JordanCon 2015!
And to round out this first of many Wall o’ Texts: Amir@7, excellent! And for everybody, (imaginary) key lime pie in the (imaginary) bunker!
I’ll bring some nice French bread and some wedges of good sharp cheddar and good parmesan next Tuesday. You boozehounds will need to eat some bread. Right, Woofer?
@71 – the technical term for ensuring adequate food while drinking is “soppage.” The more you know….
Chris @71
Since you brought up the t-shirts…start thinking about design features.
Let the soppage begin.
Hooray!
That is all.
Been seeing a lot of people saying what I am thinking. Obviously, I am pretty late, so I am going to have to start checking on Tuesdays. I am looking forward to it, and happy that I am not the only one who found the reread late and just lurked around because they weren’t there from the beginning.
Really looking forward to the Redux. Like so many, i discovered Leigh’s blog late – she was in CoT. I’m happy to anticipate more in-depth treatment of the early books, especially the first one, where so much is set up, yet there are apparent teasers that are never fulfilled. Can’t wait for the discussion and analysis.
Sweet! I’m looking forward to following along from the beginning of the Redux, since I was late to the original Reread, and then frequently absent due to forgetfulness.
I’m going to go with a guess of 3 head-desks per post for the first couple of books.
I’m ridiculously excited about this. I stumbled on the 1st reread about 1/2way through and sort of lurked, trying not to spoil anything for myself. But now this will be a reread for me, and I’m going to read along!
@7 YES. Perfection!
@13 – you got skis!??? What the hell? Leigh flew me up here to the summit in her fancy “Re-Re-Read” helicopter, got me harnessed into the climbing rig and then pushed me over a cliff, and now I’m just hanging on for dear life…..waiting…….
Sulin told me this was starting up, so here I am. I’m in on the ground floor of the reread of the reread!!
Will there be cake?
RobM@51
ASOIAF would be a lot higher than it is if it wasn’t supposed to be spoiler free. Really hampers the discussion.
Hi, everyone!
Dragonmount has been doing a crap job with the WoT-FAQ maintaining, how do we fix it?
Leigh, I have a little question: Have you ever posted reviews for each individual WoT book on Goodreads? If you haven’t, could you tell us when you do? That’s quite a good site and nobody would be even bothered for having a bit more of your good-natured humor. I would appreciate it even more if your reviews were long, with spoilers, and filled with images.
7. Amir
Very nice-a!
28. JeffS.
Now that’s a loony theory.
Jonathan @84 – Long time no see! Been missing you around here.
::waves enthusiastically::
I hope and pray that you and yours are well.
Ah, I see a goodly chunk of the usual suspects are on board. Count me in.
One thing I will be interested to see is if Leigh ever addresses the comments from the first go-round. While I really enjoyed Leigh’s commentary and summary work, the comment section was also a big part of my “re-read” experience.
There were times when you all were absolutely brilliant (or absolutely insane – or both.) I’m looking forward to revisiting those parts. I guess I’m also looking forward to cringing a bit when I read some of my old comments.
Oh, maybe I’m confused. I thought it would be a re-read of the re-read.
Jonathan Levy @@@@@
You’re probably right especially since I have one about Aviendha’s quads and Min’s vision about them that I’m hoping to talk about later.
Jeff S.
I am still only an egg
AP@81. Indeed. If you add the regular post totals plus the corresponding spoiler post totals, it may not get fully up into WoT land but not too far away.
JL @84. Well played, sir! And welcome back.
Fork@86. That is one of the fun things about Jo Walton’s (neverending I hope) posts about the Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller chronicles. The comments in one post are often the genesis of Jo’s thinking in the next post and she identifies those posters by name (and sometimes grants them imaginary honors). That is an incredibly interactive set of posts and comments.
So. It has come to this. I decided to do my normal weekly check-in of Tor…and what do my eyes see? A re-read of a re-read? What devilry is this!? I am a bit shocked(almost spit out part of my Monday Hazulnut Mocha) but very pleased. Especially since last re-read, I came in late(around TDR or TSR, I think?). Alas, my free time has drastically diminished since the olden days of 2009, so I can’t promise to post all the time. But I do hope to pop in every now and again…
Also, this is a great opportunity to do my own WoT re-read. I’ve been meaning to for a while, but haven’t made the plunge. Started an HP reread instead(just finished CoS), so now I have good impetus to quickly finish the last five books of that and then dive into TEotW.
Can’t wait for this. It’s gonna be fun, y’all. :)
RobM@89:
True, still not to WoT levels… but I think separating the spoiler thread and the other thread actually causes less people to post period, and stifles the conversation on both threads… I think the numbers would be about the same on average.
AP – true but hard to avoid given Leigh’s unsullied status and the fun associated with her reactions to unexpected plot twists.
@90 – about to finish my latest one. I’m about 1/4 of the way though AMOL.
“Back in the Saddle again…”
And here we are, flirting with 100 comments before anything has happened yet.
Only a WOT reread/redux could be counted on for that.
Only a few hours left until we start…
can’t wait!
Jeff S.
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you, tomorrow, you’re only a day away…. :D
Tune cooties FTW!
Can’t wait… the first books deserve more examination, Headesking commence!
Alright, I’ll pitch in to get us to the hunny on the introductory post. Let’s see who wants it the most! ;)
Leigh,
you realize that by making things up as you go along you’re just setting yourself up for a re-read of the re-read of the re-read, right?
Right. Just checking…
Looking forward to this~
Victory is mine!
KiManiak, that’s the spirit ;)
As for discussions on theory, as has been said already there is some scope for this. At the end things were left pretty open so we can try to look for character traits and foreshadowings to deduce possible futures post AMOL, for example. The “executions” of some of the prophesies/dreams, etc., was rather vague too. Or RobMx2 can try again to convince anyone and everyone about Tam + Morgase…
@100 – yes, that damned Sanderson screwed up what was SUPPOSED to happen. Discuss!
@101 RobM²
Who says it hasn’t already happened?
Who indeed….
While watching the Emmys I was reminded of similarities between True Detective and Wheel of Time. Time is a Flat Circle sounds like something out of the Second Age. Rand battling Moridin in Carcosa. Woody Harrelson torn by his love for three women, etc.
And just think of all the new information we will have once The Wheel of Time Companion comes out in Nov. 2015. Wonder if the Re-read redux will take a break while we absorb it all?
Check out this site for a write up on the Worldcon panel: http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2014/08/details-on-wheel-of-time-companion.html
It,s Like Having an Old Friend back!!!
I wonder if Leigh will cover The Strike AT Shayol Ghul?
Lots of good stuff that hasnt really been coverd before.
Having read the first volume for the Hugos, I will join you for that at least. (Yes, I did read the spoiler warning. But reading the whole of WoT before this blog continues might be a problem. And I did also mug up on the plot for the Hugos, so I have to live with spoilers anyway.)
@104 Braid_Tug
We’ll just do a Re-read Redux Companion Edition after the original Re-read Redux is finished.
@105 Dorman
It did get covered occasionally in the comments though, as far as I remember.
Yay, this is the best news I’ve had in a long time :-). Thank you Leigh for writing these articles once again. I’m looking forward to sharing the ride.
RobM@92… she so rarely participates in the comment thread that I don’t understand why it needs to be spoiler free. But dem’s da rulez…
I didn’t know anything about this YA prologue before Leigh started this redux reread with it. Her synopsis does make it sound heavy-handed. The part with the ravens sounds odd to me, in that if these ravens showed up or stayed around, certainly others would notice. Tam sounds awesome as ever. Rand pretending he wants to be a king? Egwene already seemingly knowing she’s to marry Rand? Those seem like a stretch, considering she’s 9 and he’s a tween.
I hope I can keep up with the reread. I sure fell behind during the original reread. Life intervened.
The 9 and 11 thing never bothered me… these are comments based on what the town parents are saying and being repeated by everyone… this is a real-world reality in small communities even today.
anthony @109 – Even when Leigh doesn’t participate in the comments much, I think she reads them all, or at least tries to.
wet@112:
Well, sure. I’m just saying it stifles the comments, and I’m pretty sure her time isn’t so overabundant that she couldn’t find something else if we took the ROIAF comment thread away from her :) The point is moot. The PTBs have spoken long ago. My only point was that it artificially keeps the comments lower than the WoT re-read comments. GThat online community is every bit as large as WoT… maybe larger.
@113: Agreed that the point is moot, of course, but for the record, the Read of Ice and Fire comments are split into spoiler and non-spoiler sections according to Leigh’s wishes, since she’d prefer to work her way through the books/series at her own pace–that’s been the nature of the experiment from the very start, and we couldn’t be happier with the results thus far.
Wasn’t trying to make a deal out of it Bridget. Sorry if it came across that way! The context of the discussion was RobM@89 commenting on the size of the WoT thread in comparison with the other regularly large thread, the ROIAF thread. I was just trying to make the point that the nature of how that particular blog is structured in such a way that its at a disadvantage in the comparison with the WoT re-read thread. It sort of got off topic a bit after that, mea culpa.
Hey, guys! Leigh is getting the band back together! She’s got a new song already called “Ravens.” This is going to be even more aweso…oh, wow – you’re here already…
Okay, this isn’t a band but that was the feeling I had when I logged in last Tuesday and saw the new material (which I had purchased but neglected to read) and saw so many familiar names, both from the past reread and another read. It was – well, it was a new beginning! I always enjoy Leigh’s insights and the input from the commentariat. (I learn more on this site before 9 AM than most people learn all day!)
I typically lurk but decided to start the new reread out with my thanks to Tor, Leigh, moderators and everyone who contributes. You enrich my life and stretch my brain cells. Surprisingly, there was a lot in this prologue so I will add some thoughts a little later…must go tune my mental guitar. The ‘band’ is back – rock on with your bad selves!
Welcome Avlonnic. Definitely jump on in – the water is warm and sometimes bubbly.
Bubbly? Ewwwwww ;)
Lisamarie – think spa not Shrek.
Yes, try that. And breathing through your mouth.
@58 KiManiak: LOL! Well there wasn’t much to say at the start. As you’ll see I’ve gotten nice and long again on subsequent posts. ;)
